adding to the oeuvre of high end homes in the cape town area, ‘de wet 34′ by south african studio SAOTA nestles itself into the slope of lions head,
serving as a platform from which to view the bantry bay sea-scape. the four level residence greets visitors at the top of the site, revealing its
true scale as the user ventures through the sequence of program. the U-shaped footprint harnesses an open courtyard visible from every room,
a private oasis sheltered by the enveloping wings of the house. the private living areas are located in the partially subterranean part of the property,
while the living room exists in a transparent volume between the courtyard and the distant ocean. retractable glass partitions open the social
function to the exterior, blurring the distinction between the protected inside of the house and the yard and pool. a range of materials were
used to respond to the various tones and textures that occur naturally in the area and give the house an elegant character. rock, timber and
concrete members make up the primary structure of the house, accented by weathered redwood ceiling planks, grey shale, reflective granite,
and a set of minimalist furniture. the interior color scheme boasts a rather neutral monochromatic range, allowing the changing colors of the
landscape to complement the interior spaces.
