One of the primary goals for this short-listed competition project is to convert the existing mixed-use facility into an iconic public space that creates a new place to be in Trenton. In order to accomplish this goal, I introduced a “grid enclosed tower” –
creating a visually captive structure on the southwest corner.
This feature will serve as an icon for the facility and be beautifully illuminated at night. In addition, the inner fabric of the tower can be illuminated in various colors to present “seasonal” themes or to promote a non-profit or City event.
In addition to the symbolic architectural elements, the “people place” at the street level was proposed to create spaces that attract the public attention as well as the pedestrian. This new public plaza features a multi-level, cascading water fountain to create an inviting, special place for people to gather. The streetscape will also integrate sidewalk and pedestrian enhancements to improve the patron experience, and connect to the neighborhood, adjacent buildings and Mill Hill Park.
